Rénoclimat is Québec’s home energy-efficiency program. For windows and doors the rule is simple once you know it, but the paperwork trips people up. Here is the checklist we hand to homeowners, built on the official terms published on Québec.ca (page last updated June 10, 2025; checked September 2026). Program terms can change — always confirm on the official page.

Rénoclimat for doors and windows: the 8 steps

What Rénoclimat pays for doors and windows

$150 per rough opening in which you install an ENERGY STAR-certified door or window. The amount is per opening, not per pane: a bay window made of three units in one wall opening counts once. The unit must go into an existing rough opening in a wall or roof, and it must be the complete unit — replacing only the glass, the sash or a door without its frame does not qualify.

1. Check that your home and project are eligible

Rénoclimat targets existing homes; new construction and additions are outside the doors-and-windows measure. Register with the program before you start — the evaluation in step 2 must happen before the work.

2. Book the pre-renovation energy evaluation

A Rénoclimat energy advisor visits, tests the house and produces a report. This visit is the baseline; work done before it cannot be claimed. Lead times vary by season, so book the evaluation when you start getting quotes, not after.

3. Get a written quote that names ENERGY STAR models

Ask your window and door supplier to identify, on the quote, which units are ENERGY STAR-certified for the Canadian climate zone. On our quotes this is marked line by line, and our team flags any opening where a non-certified option would cost you the assistance.

4. Replace complete units in existing openings

This is the rule people miss. Full window with frame, full door with frame, into the opening you already have. Enlarging an opening or adding a new one is a different conversation (and usually a permit).

5. Keep every ENERGY STAR label and invoice

The advisor will ask for the invoices and the ENERGY STAR labels from the products at the follow-up visit. Peel the labels off carefully after installation and keep them with the invoice — we hand ours to the homeowner in an envelope at the end of the job for exactly this reason.

6. Ask about air sealing while the crew is there

Rénoclimat also recognizes improvements in the home’s airtightness measured between the two evaluations. Window and door replacement is the natural moment to seal around openings; ask your advisor how airtightness gains are assessed in your file rather than assuming an amount.

7. Book the post-renovation evaluation

The advisor returns, re-tests the house and verifies the products against the labels and invoices. Financial assistance is calculated from this visit.

8. Receive the assistance

After the post-renovation evaluation is processed, the program issues the payment. Keep a copy of both reports; they also document the home’s efficiency for a future sale.

Frequently asked

Is there a maximum number of openings? The official doors-and-windows page states the per-opening amount and conditions; it does not publish a cap on that page. Confirm any overall program limits with your advisor.
Do patio doors count? Yes — a patio door is a door replaced in an existing opening, at $150 for the opening.
Can Factory Direct do the paperwork? We identify eligible products, mark them on the quote, hand you the labels and invoices, and answer the advisor’s product questions. The program registration and evaluations are yours to book.
